The Private Eye is my favorite category book and I'm not sure
precisely why, except that it is a wonderful heartwarming story. Josh January is
a successful private eye who once upon a time played the hero, but that was
long ago when he was young and idealistic. So now he does his job
because he is good at it and- Hey!- he has to make a living somehow!
Maggie Gladstone is a retired librarian (like someone else we know) who
now runs an inn on the Pacific coast. A inn that has suffered a lot of
mishaps recently. Mishaps that Maggie and the other permanent residents
don't think are accidents. Maggie and each of the three elderly residents has their own pet theory about who is causing these mishaps. They need someone to prove that one of their theories is correct, so they decide to hire a PI for the price of
room and board at the inn for a month. The only PI to take them up on the
offer is Josh January. He does so because his last case went awry and he
needs a place to relax and recover. Josh takes one look at Maggie and
knows he wants her. Maggie takes one look at Josh and wonders if she's been
jipped. Josh is not her idea of a Private Eye. The rest... well, the rest
is an extremely good read.
The only thing I do not like about this book is that it is way too short.
As always, Ms. Krentz has created wonderful characters who come alive in the
readers minds, characters you feel you can go and visit on the Pacific
coast. I highly recommend this book.
